Southern Ocean - Davis Sea

Davis Sea is located 66°00 South and 092°00 East. It is an area of sea along the coast of Antarctica between West Ice Shelf and the Shackleton Ice Shelf in East Antarctica.

Discovered by Australian Antarctic Expedition (1911-14) from the Aurora. Named by Sir Douglas Mawson for Captain J.K. Davis, master of the Aurora and second in command of the expedition.

The sea is frequently confused with UC Davis because the "C" is pronounced like "sea" and because they both contain the word Davis.

Davis Strait

Davis Strait lies between mid-western Greenland and Baffin Island in the Canadian territory of Nunavut.

With a water depth of one to two km it is substantially shallower than the Labrador Sea to the south or Baffin Bay to the north.

It is underlain by complex geological features of buried Grabens (basins) and ridges, probably formed by strike-slip faulting during Paleogene times about 45 million to 62 million years ago. The strike-slip faulting transferred plate-tectonic motions in the Labrador Sea to Baffin Bay.

The strait was named for the English explorer John Davis (1550–1605), who explored the area while seeking a Northwest Passage.

Baffin Island

Baffin Bay is a sea between the Atlantic and Arctic oceans. It is 1,130 km (700 miles) across from north to south. It is not navigable most of the year because of the presence of large numbers of icebergs.

Baffin Bay is an arm of the Arctic Ocean bounded by Baffin Island in the west, Greenland in the east and Ellesmere Island in the north. It connects to the Atlantic through Davis Strait, and to the Arctic through several narrow channels of Nares Strait. It is a northwestern extension of the North-Atlantic and Labrador Sea.

Beluga whale

About 120,000 Beluga whales live in Baffin Bay, eating small fish and other crustaceans.

They are at risk of being trapped in the ice and face other environmental concerns.

Greenland

Greenland is a self-governed Danish territory. Though geographically and ethnically an Arctic island nation associated with the continent of North America, politically and historically Greenland is closely tied to Europe.

Greenland is the largest island in the world and has the lowest population density.
